How can I prevent tarnish on jewelry that contains silver or mixed metals?

Jewelry boxes are a great way to keep your jewelry organized and dust-free, but they don’t protect against tarnish.

To slow the appearance of tarnish, silver jewelry can be kept in sealed plastic bags.

Keeping the air out will slow the process of oxidation. Try laying the plastic bag containing the jewelry piece on a flat surface.

Press excess air from the bag before sealing. Another idea is to use anti-tarnish tissue paper to wrap your fashion jewelry in, which will give your jewelry the best protection against sullying.

Does it matter when I put on jewelry?

Many jewelry surfaces are affected by common skin and hair care products.

TIP: Putting jewelry on last, after hair spray, fragrances, soaps, lotions and oils will help retain their original appearance.

Soaps and detergents are especially damaging to the elastic used in “stretchy” bracelets and rings.

TIP: Take these off before washing to extend the life of the elastic.

Traveling with your jewelry

Make sure your jewelry is individually wrapped in the ziplock plastic bags in which they were shipped or any other ziplock bags with the air completely removed.

For pieces that are fragile that include shell, wrap bubble wrap around the bag for extra cushion. Rubber band all jewelry boxes to make sure they do not open while in flight. Pack all jewelry in your carry on.

NEVER check a bag that contains jewelry!

For additional durability, a hatbox can provide the hard casing that is still easily manageable to take on board your flight.

Whenever you aren’t wearing jewelry that contains metal, keep it in ziplock bags with the air removed to prevent tarnishing and oxidation.

Post-Trash the dress jewelry care

After you are finished with your Trash the Dress session, rinse jewelry off with bottled or tap water and place in an area (the sun if possible) to dry.

After the jewelry is completely dried, place it back in the plastic ziplock bag with all of the air removed. It is highly advised to make sure your jewelry is completely dry before placing it in the bag.
